Historical Romance Tale; Flight of Little Dove
Flight of Little Dove is a romance to be sure, but it is also a story of the Wild West and things women with gumption had to do to survive in such a rough era. The story relates to that past beautifully and is historically believable. Little Dove was a captured white woman who was so determined to survive amongst white society once again that she became a deceased victim of an Indian raid, taking on the woman's life and shedding her own. How Little Dove takes on the persona is a beautiful stroke of destiny and the path she finds herself on is one not easily taken.

Little Dove falls in love, only to find her new persona is a mail-order bride to someone else. She deals with the struggles of having three personalities living within her; that of her former white woman self: Emma, her Indian captive self: Little Dove, and her newly formed self: Margaret. The way the author ties them all together is beautifully done and makes for a very light romance read.
There are difficult things to read about of course; death and the struggles familiar to people of that day and age, but it does not make this novel too deep to bear. It is still a light read suitable for any time of day or night when you long for a novel to get lost in. The Flight of Little Dove is a perfect example of escapist literature with the power to captivate and enthrall you.
Praise for Western Romance in Flight of Little Dove
One of the best things about Flight of Little Dove is the vibrant characters. Ruth Zavitsanos truly has a talent for breathing life into her characters and making them believable people you can relate to and easily come to know. Little Dove and Seb especially are so full of life, that you immediately become emotionally invested in their outcomes. You want them to have a happily ever after.
The hardships of this novel also make it a pleasure to read because the author stays true to the realistic truths of the wild west and does not make is simply a fairy tale. Bad things happen to the characters, everything is not all perfect, which lends a stability to the story. Things often don't go in the direction the characters would prefer and the author handled those situations with a beautiful finesse and a relatable dialogue.
Problems With Literary Fiction in Flight of Little Dove
To be clear, I do thoroughly recommend this book to any historical romance fan, however there were a couple of discrepancies that detract from the story a little. If, like me, you notice every miniscule detail of a book because you become so thoroughly invested in a novel, then you will notice a few editing details and contradictions in Flight of Little Dove. Keep in mind that I do still recommend this novel, but I noticed the author had said one character's name when I am sure she meant another and had a few minor mistakes of that sort.
I also thought some more detailing of the scenery and such would be nice. At the beginning of the book, the protagonist jumps from her first setting so fast that I longed for her to return to it. I was sure the main character would go back to the first setting because I simply didn't get enough detail from it. That part in Little Dove's life was important, yet it was underplayed in a sense and I wanted to know more to better understand the character and her life.
